We have personally used Airbnb on numerous occasions around the world and for varying lengths of time. We first started using them in 2015 and so far we have had nothing but awesome memories and wonderful hosts.
If you’re the type of person who needs a bit more space and privacy when travelling, but still wanting to stick to a backpackers budget, Airbnb is 100% for you. It’s also great for a large group of friends travelling as you can split the cost, and stay in a really great place!
We always check out Airbnb’s website (here is a link to a £30 (AUD$50) coupon code for your next stay!) for great deals before we book anything.
Trick: Even if you already have an Airbnb account, you can sign up with a different email address to take advantage of the code again!
Airbnb is getting more popular by the day, and I’m sure a lot of you already use it for accommodation around the world, but there are still quite a few travellers out there who have never heard of Airbnb before, so we thought it would be a great booking site to review and show you guys why we love it so much.
In this review we hope to show you exactly what you’re missing out on! There are so many advantages and positives of using Airbnb as your holiday rental website.
1. More Space, A lot Less Costly
When booking online you can choose three options: entire home, private room or shared room. Even in a shared room, the space will be a lot larger than a standard dorm room in a hostel. You can rent anything from an apartment, townhouse, cabin, a house, chalet the list just goes on! It’s pretty awesome if you think about it.
In nearly all cases you will have a separate bathroom, bedroom, kitchen, balcony, living room and much more. Which generally a standard hotel room would not give you, unless you’re paying thousands for a suite in the Ritz!
2. Great and Cost Effective for a big group of friends
To be honest, Airbnb is great for pretty much anyone. But it can be super cost effective if you have a big group of friends (a lot cheaper than paying separately for a hostel). This is because with a hotel, you might have to rent multiple rooms, pay fees for all of the people, and more.
If you are renting, you can usually find an affordable house with multiple bedrooms that can fit your whole family comfortably for a price that is much cheaper than at a hotel.
With our £25 coupon code for Airbnb, it’s even more affordable. No, £30 isn’t a ton of money, but every little helps when you’re wanting to save money!
3. Huge range of properties
Airbnb is suited to everyone. Whether you’re a budget traveller just wanting a room for the night in a local neighbourhood or you’re wanting to splash you’re cash on a luxury pool villa in Bali, there are just so many options to choose from on Airbnb that you would never get on a hotel booking platform.
You also have massive freedom in the length of your stay all the way from one night to several months.
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to stay in a glass treehouse in the Tuscan forest, a restored windmill in Santorini or on your own private island in Belize? Well Airbnb can make this possible!
4. Local Atmosphere
Personally, we believe information provided by Airbnb property owners are a lot more appropriate (to us) than what we extract from hotel staff. For instance, home owners recommend more down-to-earth (authentic, local favourite) restaurants than hotel concierges (trendy, touristy).
Airbnb is a great way to experience the ‘real’, authentic city or destination you are visiting, as you usually stay in local neighbourhoods so they are more authentically fun, restaurants and shops charge less, and people are naturally friendlier, instead of being surrounded by world wide chain hotels.
5. Price
The price of holiday rentals is usually a lot lower than hotel rooms of comparable quality. Our Airbnb rental in Boracay, The Philippines last October had a plush king bed, amazing outdoor shower, huge balcony overlooking the ocean, two levels, full kitchen, private entrance, privacy, and many custom touches; the rate was half the price of nearby comparable hotels in the area. Lets repeat that: Half the price of nearby hotels!
6. Free Wifi
Who doesn’t love free wifi in todays world?! Airbnb has good, working wifi, unlike many hotel wifi’s we have experienced in the past. A common hotel complaint is costly and ineffective wifi. Every vacation rental we have stayed at had strong and free wifi. Most rentals also had extended cable, AppleTV, Netflix, and/or other fantastic entertainment options!
7. You can make money with Airbnb!
Okay, this isn’t a main reason why you should use Airbnb to book accommodation.
BUT
You can make a little extra money by hosting travellers in your own home, or if you’re home is unoccupied whilst you’re on the road yourself. If you have an extra room, an apartment above a garage, a guest house, or something else, you can make money through Airbnb.
If you sign up and host someone through our link (that’s the same link throughout our Airbnb review that will give you a £30 Airbnb coupon code as well), you will receive a £55 bonus.
However, we understand if you’re not up for that. Instead if you use our link to receive £30 off your first booking and you personally refer someone else you will also receive £55 in travel credit. A win win situation!
Before you book your Airbnb Rental…
There are a few things you should take into consideration, to make your stay even better:
- Make sure to read previous Airbnb reviews for the property
- This is just like Trip-advisor, they will tell you a lot about the property you are looking at, as sometimes the pictures and description by the owner may be a bit biased or false. You will want to read the reviews in order to see if the rental is the correct one for you, how the host is, and more.
- Read the rules of the property carefully
- In the description of the property, under house rules there may be specific guidelines the host will highlight. Including no smoking, not suitable for pets, no parties etc.
- Airbnb is not a hotel
- Usually your host will greet you and show you the basics of the rental, but once gone, there will be no one to clean your place, cook you food, no concierge etc. This is a common thing that a lot of travellers forget.
- Check the location
- You may find the most amazing rental with a swimming pool, beautiful gardens and a stunning ensuite room for an unbelievable price. You may think how is that possible? Check the location, it may be miles outside the city with no good transport links. If this is what you want then great, but a lot of people looking for rentals want convenience and good public transport access, so bear this in mind when looking for rentals.
Don’t forget to sign up for Airbnb since you will receive a £30 Airbnb coupon code for your next stay. This Airbnb coupon code does not expire, so you can just sign up and it will just save to your account for when you plan your trip in the future!

Agree with everything here! We love using Airbnb and sometimes find that it’s cheaper than private rooms at hostels. Thanks for sharing!

Hey Amanada!
You’re totally right, we have noticed this on a number of occasions too!

I have not yet considered Airbnb but after reading your post clarifying the difference from that of maybe a hostel it might be something to consider. I have often stayed away from backpacker budget places assuming that you don’t have much privacy. That is one thing I think would be the most difficult for me is that I am very much an introvert and desperately need my privacy to unwind. I like the idea of the pricing being a lower cost and getting a the experience of staying with the locals, much better than touristy kind of stuff.
Hi Jimmy and Tina!
We’re so happy you’re considering Airbnb, its a perfect way to enjoy privacy but with a similar price to hostels, especially if you’re sharing! Airbnb is a perfect way to experience more of the local culture! Don’t forget to use our coupon code for money off you’re first stay 🙂

I am sticking to hostels for now. Never thought of going for AirBNB. It would be really great to live in a locals house and experience their culture. I will give it a try sometime.
Hi Gokul!
Hostels are the best way to travel if you want to make friends, but we suggest you give Airbnb a go sometime, it is a great option if you’re in the area for a while or wanting to explore local suburbs! Remember to use our coupon code for money off you’re first stay! 🙂

I have never used an air bnb although I have heard a lot about it and would like to try it out someday., I prefer staying with friends or relatives or at the most hostels when i travel with friends or alone. With parents, it is always a hotel. But air bnb is gaining grounds these days and i would love to experiment with them.
Hi Subhadrika Sen!
Airbnb is a great way to save money and live like a local, we would highly recommend you try it, maybe for 1 or 2 nights to see if you like it! 🙂

Can you believe I have never used AirB&B?
I do usually stay at hostels, and when looking to stay with locals I rather chose Couchsurfing so I can make it for free! Although I must say I did used Wimbdu (works the same) during my stay in Munich for the Oktoberfest!
After reading this, I’m definitely gonna check it out better and use the “£25 coupon discount code for the next stay 🙂
Great post!
Hi Marina!
Couchsurfing is another great option, but we love Airbnb due to the fact you can get wonderful apartments to yourself for nearly the same price as hostels! Yes please do use our coupon code, you’ll have to tell us how your first Airbnb experience was! 🙂

I’ve been browsing online more than 4 hours
today, yet I never found any interesting article like yours.
It’s pretty worth enough for me. Personally, if all website owners and bloggers made good content as you
did, the internet will be much more useful than ever before.
Hi Kristen!
Thanks a lot 🙂
