The Best GoPro Accessories for Travelling

Sharing is caring!

We absolutely LOVE our GoPro, and would never travel without it. It’s been through thick and thin, all terrains, and it doesn’t have one single scratch on it! We’ve managed to take awesome underwater pictures, action shots and videos that no ordinary DSLR camera could possibly take. But behind the magic is the GoPro accessories, it can pretty much make or break a great shot. As a result, we are providing you with our favourite and very best GoPro accessories for travelling, that you must not leave without. Of course we have trialled and tested all of these to give you the very best GoPro accessories for travelling list.

What is a GoPro?

Most people will know what a GoPro is, as nowadays it is a very popular camera for photographers. But for those who don’t know, a GoPro is an action camera that is primarily designed for adrenaline/action sports like surfing, skiing, scuba diving, mountain climbing, the list goes on. However, you don’t need to be into that kind of stuff to buy one, or take awesome shots. A GoPro is awesome for taking videos of your travels, great selfies and just a small lightweight camera to have around.

There are various models of the GoPro ranging from the basic first model all the way to the most recent GoPro Hero 5 Black (which is an awesome camera!). They have different specifications and range greatly in price. They all come with a durable plastic housing that keeps the camera safe from water, dust and other particles.

Top Pick.

GoPro Hero 5 Black

GoPro Hero 5 Black

The GoPro Hero 5 Black is the latest GoPro, and in our opinion the most advanced and greatest one yet.

It comes packed with new features such as voice activation, waterproof capable without a dedicated housing, RAW image capabilities, and built-in stabilisation.

Our Favourite GoPro Accessories

When you’re browsing online or looking at the wide selection in a store, it can be hard to tell which accessories are the most suitable for your trip and will be the best choice for your adventures abroad, so you can capture the best videos and photos on your travels.

There are so many different travel accessories available but these are our recommendations for the must-haves when travelling.

GoPole Reach

A pole for your GoPro has quickly become a must as far as accessories go. You see poles being used in just about every GoPro video these days. There are hundreds out there, resulting in so many different brands to choose from. Our personal favourite for great videos, selfies and awesome panoramic shots is the GoPole Reach. Here are some of its best features:

  • Super Compact and Portable, making it easy to pack into your backpack.
  • Lightweight, weighs less than 8 ounces
  • 40 inches of extension, making it great for panoramic shots.
  • Remote clip, wrist strap and screw is included.
  • Suitable for all GoPro models.

GoPole Evo

The GoPole Evo is the sister to the Reach, both made by the same company, and both high quality. We use the GoPole Evo for underwater shots and videos, as the Evo is fully waterproof and floats. This is a great pole if you’re wanting a pole you can use when snorkelling or diving. Some of its great features include:

  • Transparent body, making it seemingly invisible.
  • Floats, incase you drop it underwater.
  • Fully Waterproof, great for those underwater shots.
  • 24 inches of extension.
  • Lightweight and Compact, easy to pack into a backpack.
  • Wrist strap, smart remote clip and screw included.

GoPro Suction Cup Mount

This mount is great for all types of travel photos and videos, especially transportation. The GoPro Suction Cup Mount can produce amazing time lapses, videos, and action shots whilst cruising down any terrain in a car, boat, bus, bike you name it.

  • You can quickly attach your GoPro to windows and other surfaces, whilst you sit back and relax.
  • Very sturdy, even at high speeds (150km/h, we’ve tried it!) it won’t fall off.
  • Great for action shots and videos

GoPole Base – BiDirectional Compact Tripod

This is a great little tripod that folds into 6 locking positions for use as a tabletop tripod for all GoPro cameras or a support base for other GoPole products, like the Evo and Reach. Some great features of the GoPole Base include:

  • Lightweight and compact, you can pack it easily into your backpack.
  • Sturdy and can hold other GoPole products, to get a higher view.
  • Each leg can be adjusted differently if on uneven surfaces.
  • Its waterproof!

GoPole Lens Pen – Compact Lens Cleaner

This little accessory is a must, you’ll be surprised how much dirt and dust gets into the camera when travelling. The invisible cleaning compound removes dust, blemishes and those dreaded fingerprints, a cleaner lens means cleaner footage! First, clean your lens with the flexible chamois cleaning tip, then simply wipe away excess with the retractable ultra fine brush, and you’re ready to shoot, Click here to get yours!

GoPro Underwater Dome

Ever wondered how photographers get that awesome under/over water shot? Well, here it is! The GoPro Underwater Dome. The dome placed in the waterline sharpens the image on the surface and focuses on a “virtual image” underwater. Resulting in the subjects in focus, looking closer to the camera than they really are. The result is an impressive shot of a double scene that would never be visible to your naked eye: one that that joins both over and underwater worlds.

GoPro Hero 5 Rechargeable Battery

For anyone that has got the new GoPro Hero 5 Black should definitely consider purchasing an additional battery, as GoPro’s in general have a notoriously short battery life. Having spare batteries really helps to extend the amount of action you’re able to get from your camera and once one runs out, you can just pop a fresh one in and get filming again.

Smatree GoPro Hero 4 Rechargeable Battery

If you haven’t yet bought the new GoPro Hero 5 Black, and you’re still using the GoPro Hero 4, we would highly recommend the Smatree. It comes with a three channel charger, a mini USB port and two additional batteries to compliment the standard GoPro battery. With the Smatree you can charge your additional batteries on the go, so you’ll never run out of battery on your GoPro again.

SanDisk 64GB Micro SD Card

Running out of memory and not being able to film or take pictures any longer is a huge drag and can put a damper on any trip. Sandisk is a great company and you can definitely rely on their memory cards for your GoPro needs. We recommend picking up a 64GB Sandisk Micro SD Card, as they’re high quality and have a fast file transfer. Memory cards are so cheap these days that you owe it to yourself to pick up at least 2 or 3 before heading out on your adventure.

GoPro Anti-Fog Inserts

What happens when a warm GoPro goes for a plunge in cold water? Condensation. These bad boys make sure your camera never has to deal with pesky fog in the lens, which can ruin your perfect shots. One of our favourite things to do around the world is water sports, whether it’s diving, snorkelling, or surfing, if our GoPro is filled with fog/condensation our photos are just not up to standards, so please consider purchasing Anti-Fog Inserts. You don’t want to spend X amount on a GoPro, only to find out your water proof housing has fogged up and you have lost that shot of a life time..

Conclusion

A lot of choosing which accessories are best for you comes down to what products will get the job done. Some accessories might prove to be totally useless given the environment your travelling in. So, as we travel around the world we’re constantly adjusting and adapting to what we need in our kit. For example, if we are skiing we won’t need the GoPole Evo, instead we would take the Reach. It also helps to see what companies are offering, as they are constantly updating their products.

Have you got any additional accessories you’d like to add to the list? Or you have a question about the above accessories? We’d be happy to answer, just comment below!

Thank you for a detailed post about the GoPro. I have been on the fence about getting one. I see all the advantages and think it’s probably time. Really remarkable what it can do.

      Hi Lisa!

Before purchasing our first GoPro we were a little unsure about buying one, purely because of the price. But honestly, it is our most used action camera, and SO great for underwater and videos, we’d be lost without one now!

      Happy Travels!

That first photo looks like the Blue Mountains in New South Wales. Thanks for this post. I always wondered how those awesome under/over water photos happened.

What about drones? I’d be reluctant to fly one of my good cameras, but I’m guessing that if I got into droning, a GoPro would be the way to fly?

    • Luxurybackpacking 01/02/2017 at 9:20 am - Reply

      Hi Pete!

The first photo is actually in South Africa by the Three Rondavels! 🙂 Yes those under/over water photos are amazing!
We haven’t tried a drone yet and are a little reluctant due to all the legal issues associated with them in different countries, but a GoPro would definitely be the way to go!

      Happy Travels!

I was reading much about the GoPro Underwater Dome and I think I will buy it soon – videos and pictures with the use of it are so amazing! This is a great, comprehensive list! We bought the bulk of attachments from Amazon and they have come in really handy! I love attaching the Go Pro to the side of the car when driving around the countryside 🙂

Great guide, the go-pro was next on my list and I think this post is tipping me over the edge. I honestly had no idea how they go those underwater shots – I think you are giving away trade secrets!

I want to buy Gopro and here is come to know all about it.. such a great guide. During our globe-trotting adventures we often regretted not having an action camera. We’ve often found ourselves without any way to record these experiences. This will help us to buy one.

    • Luxurybackpacking 01/06/2017 at 3:34 am - Reply

      Hi Sridhar!

GoPro are amazing, we’d honestly be lost without one whilst travelling. You can capture videos and photos you’d wouldn’t be able to take on a normal DSLR camera, such as underwater, action and during strong weather conditions!
I would definitely take the plunge and go for it!

      Happy Travels!

I know most people rave about owning a GoPro but we actually sold ours….lol! I’m obsessed with taking pictures but I can’t deal with carrying so many accessories. 😉

    • Luxurybackpacking 01/06/2017 at 9:15 pm - Reply

      Hi Lydia!

Oh really, I’ve never heard of anyone doing that before! We keep all our accessories and the GoPro in a secure case that way they aren’t all spread out.

      Happy Travels!
