Oh Canggu, you completely stole my heart, you’re my favourite place in the whole world. Having lived in Canggu for 4 months and visited this amazing part of Bali 9 times in 5 years, it’s safe to say that I know quite a bit about the area including the best hostels in Canggu. Bali is home to some of the best hostels in the world, and Canggu is in the heart of that. As I know a lot about the area, I want to give you a locals guide on the best places to stay depending on whether you’re a solo female traveler, a budget traveler, business traveler, a couple traveling or a backpacker wanting to party and meet others. Or maybe you’re all of the above! This guide will most certainly help you in finding the best hostel in Canggu for you!
If it’s your first time to Bali, it can be a little over whelming, there are SO many places to go, see and things to do. If you’re only here for a short period of time, it can be daunting and confusing on where to stay. Many people don’t realise how big Bali is, to get from the south to the north it can take 3/4 hours on a scooter, and the roads can get very congested.
There are so many amazing spots to discover whilst you’re in Bali, however one place that shouldn’t be missed for backpackers is definitely Canggu!
Imagine this, waking up to the sound of waves, watching pro surfers at sunset, even having a go yourself, eating at some of the most delicious cafes in the world, free yoga classes, hundreds of expats and digital nomads all in one area and great parties at night. If that doesn’t sound amazing, then I don’t know what will!
Finding The Best Hostels In Canggu For You
Before you book any hostel anywhere, you should look at what amenities they have, where they are located and what type of hostel it is.
For example, Canggu is fairly spread out and separated into smaller sub areas including: Batu Bolong, Echo Beach, Berawa and Umalas. If you can’t rent a scooter/haven’t rented one before and don’t want the extra risk, then I suggest staying closer to the main area of Batu Bolong. This means you can walk to the beach, cafes and nightlife in the area.
If you’re renting a scooter, want something a little more quieter but still within a 10 minute drive to the busy areas then Umalas or north of Echo Beach is a great shout.
Want to be close to everything, have a bike and party? Berawa is great!
The BEST Hostels In Canggu
Best Overall Hostel: The Farm Hostel
Probably the most famous hostel in Canggu, and for good reason. It has one of the most friendly atmospheres and modern living I’ve seen in the world, making it my favourite hostel in Canggu. Perfect for digital nomads and those wanting something a little more up market accommodation than your traditional hostel style. All their rooms are air-conditioned and have an ensuite with traditional open air shower. For those wanting female only dorms they have two different room types, a 6 bed and 8 bed dorm.
They also have one of the top internet providers in Bali with fibre optic WiFi from anywhere on the property, again a digital nomads requirement ticked off. They also have scooters available for hire to get round the area and to the best surf beaches. The hostel is surrounded by good restaurants and not too far from the beach (5 minute drive), which makes its location brilliant!
They also hold regular pizza and BBQ nights, which is a great way to meet new people and get to know your fellow hostel mates.

Best Luxury Hostel: GypsyMoon Bali
For those wanting a luxury hostel in a more peaceful and tranquil setting but still within a 5-10 minute driving distance of the beach, parties and amazing cafes, GypsyMoon Bali is the hostel for you. It’s also one of the most beautifully designed hostels I’ve seen, with modern interior, an amazing pool and all round luxury atmosphere for a hostel.
For anyone staying at GypsyMoon you will feel right at home. Designed in a shabby chic decor, it’s one of the most modern and luxury hostels in the area. Only 2.1 km from Echo Beach and Batu Bolong Beach, it’s perfect if you’re a surfer. Features include – an outdoor swimming pool, full air conditioned rooms, and a free continental breakfast served every morning.

Best Instagrammable & New Boutique Hostel: Kosone Hostel
Kosone is Canggu’s brand new and upcoming boutique hostel, that is the perfect place to get those Instagram shots, it also has it’s own beach club: Alternative Beach! Honestly, I’m absolutely in love with the design and layout of this hostel, and even though I live here, I’d still pay to stay here for a few nights just to experience the pool area!
It also has fantastic natural views of vibrant, green rice fields, the Indian Ocean and Bali’s famous volcano, Mount Agung. Facilities include a boutique store, 2 Jacuzzis, free WiFi and breakfast and a restaurant offering a selection of delicious and fresh options. The main attraction, however, is the large Mediterranean inspired beach pool, known as Alternative Beach. It boasts an artificial sand beach, diving platform, swing, day beds, and a pool bar, wow!
All dorms are only 4 beds too, so forget crowded and cramped dorm rooms, and you can choose between a female or mixed dorm.
Definitely the new and upcoming hostel in Canggu, so watch this space!

Best Hostel For Socialising: Castaway Hostel
Castaway Hostel is located throughout scenic rice fields and nature but also close to Canggu’s main street and the Batu Bolong Beach/Old Mans Beach. This hostel is perfect if you’re not wanting to rent a scooter, as it is walking distance to all you need even if you don’t rent scooters. However, if you’re wanting to rent scooters, you can right from reception. The owner, Putu and all the other staff are very friendly and accommodating.
The hostel’s gardens, poolside bar and large covered outdoor area offer plenty of space to chill out and relax your way through the day.
There are two different room types available here, a 6 bed mixed dorm and a 6 bed female only dorm. Facilities include: free WiFi, towels, strong air conditioning in all rooms, security lockers, parking, 24/7 security, airport transfers and luggage storage.

Best Hostel For Couples: Clandestino
Another new kid in town, Clandestino is a brand new hostel owned by the group ‘La Favela Gili hostels’. It has one of the best hangout areas with an amazing 10-meter swimming pool and 2 bars (one inside the pool), with views of a tropical Balinese garden with palm trees and rice fields views.
It’s also set in a quieter location to some of the other hostels, still on the main road into Canggu, however it’s best to have a scooter if you’re staying here to get to all the best spots in the area.
This is definitely one of the best hostels in Canggu for couples, with 2 private rooms with a king size bed, en-suite bathroom, air conditioning, hot water shower and a terrace with pool and garden views.
If you’re a solo traveler or wanting to meet people they also have 6 shared mixed dormitories, you can choose from 6 bed, 8 bed or 10 bed shared rooms. All their dorms are equipped with air conditioning, shared toilets, lockers, individual bedside lamp, and plug, and for maximum privacy, all beds have their own personal curtain.

Best Budget Hostel: The Hideout Hostel
The hideout hostel is located in a much quieter area of Canggu, closer to Pantai Pererenan and Echo Beach, therefore I suggest only staying here if you have a scooter or able to drive one. Having said that it’s one of the best hostels in Canggu for budget conscious travelers, as rooms start at just over US$6 per night!
The hostel sits in a beautiful garden surrounded by nature, and features 2 common areas, free fibre-optic Wi-Fi , self-service kitchen, a swimming Pool and a yoga shala for those yogis that want to practice.
There are two room types, a standard or deluxe 10 bed mixed dorm. All dorms come with air conditioning and boast custom beds that come with a night light and charging ports for your electrical items.
One of my favourite things about this hostel is the FREE yoga sessions, so if you’re into yoga and want somewhere to just relax and rejuvenate, the hideout hostel is for you.

Best Surf Hostel: MojoSurf Camp Canggu
So you’re in Bali, you may as well take a few surfing lessons right?! And Mojo Surf is one of the best hostels in Canggu to learn! They have years of experience in surf camps and lessons for beginners and an added bonus is that they have their own hostel! Originally based in Byron Bay, Australia they bring these vibes to Canggu, and with just a 5/10 minute walk down to Echo Beach, it’s the perfect surf hostel!
Built in 2017, it’s fresh, modern and clean. Tired from surfing? Chill out in their pool and get to know others who are doing the same as you.
There are a number of room types to suit all budgets including private rooms, female only dorms and mixed dorms. All rooms have hot showers, air conditioning, towels, free breakfast and free WiFi.
What’s more, there are so many surf camps to choose from depending on how long you’re staying, your experience level and your budget!

Best Hostel For Start-Ups/Entrepreneurs (Budget): TRIBE Theory Hostel
If you’re a young start up, blogger or entrepreneur on a budget, TRIBE Theory hostel is a great option. Located in a quiet area just north of Canggu, surrounded by rice fields and beautiful landscapes, you’ll definitely need to rent a scooter if you’re staying here as it’s about a 15 minute drive down to the beach.
I would only suggest staying here if you are dedicated and focused to business only and creating contacts in the business world, as it’s not your typical backpacker hostel. Having said that, it is perfect place to network, get some work done, and relax. You’ll meet like minded people, have a nice atmosphere to work, and there’s very affordable and good food.
There are different room types ranging from 4 and 8 bed mixed dorms as well as private rooms that start at just US$8 a night!

Best Hostel For Friendly Staff: Black Pearl Hostel
One of the best situated hostels for the famous Old Mans Beach, but set on a quiet street away from the hustle and bustle of the area. Black Pearl Hostel has a very laid back atmosphere with guests commenting saying it has the friendliest and most helpful staff they’ve ever experienced.
Black Pearl offers 20 luxurious hostel beds divided within 5 complete rooms with clean, modern, private ensuite bathrooms, air conditioning, and maid services. There is only one room type, which is a 4 bed mixed dorm, so if you’re a solo female traveler who wants a female only dorm this may not be the place for you.
Amenities include free WiFi, a huge pool and chill out area and a rooftop bar to watch the sunset from, which is definitely one of the best hostels in Canggu to do so!

Best Hostel For Solo Travelers: The Tipsy Gypsy Hostel
This hostel is one of the most popular amongst backpackers staying in Canggu, and it also has some of the best reviews, and it’s not hard to see why. Located in the heart of Canggu, just a short stroll to the famous Old Mans surfing beach. It’s a very classy newly build hostel with a beautiful pool and comfy beds.
Their amenities are great too, you can book surf lessons right from the hostel, scooter rentals, trips to the Gili islands, Lombok island, Motorcross, and even Tattoo options!
It’s relatively small with only three 6-bed dorm rooms so you’ll get to know other guests pretty easily, which is why it’s a great place for solo travelers. It’s a chilled out vibe that likes to hang but not party too hard. However, if you’re a solo female traveler who wants an all female dorm, this hostel does not accommodate for that unfortunately.
Facilities include Free WiFi, parking, towels, security lockers, hot showers and air conditioning in all rooms.
