Iceland Travel Guide: Iceland is one of the those countries that you will never get bored of visiting. It’s an all round destination, and all four seasons offer contrasting experiences and memories. Whether you’re a solo traveller, travelling with a family or couple you’ll be sure to fall in love with this magical country. One of the things I personally love about Iceland is the amount of natural beauty around every corner, making it a great destination to visit for just a few days (Golden Circle) if you’re tight on time!

I road tripped Iceland’s Ring Road for 10 days back in October, with CampEasy. This trip was definitely a highlight for 2019, and I’m already planning on going back during the winter months to experience Iceland in the height of the Northern Lights season. HIGHLIGHT

BEST TIME OF YEAR?

Iceland is a year round destination. So it’s ultimately up to you, and what your primary purpose of visiting Iceland is. Undecided? See below:

Summer. Midnight sun, meaning you’re not restricted by day light hours (bring an eye mask for sleeping!). Good weather. Best time for whale watching. However, prices are much higher and it is the busiest season, as a result lot’s of tourists will be around the main attractions.

Autumn. Cheaper than summer and a lot less tourists. Still long daylight hours. Whale watching is still possible. Chance to see the Northern Lights. Beautiful autumnal colours. However, some campsites start to close as well as some roads to attractions. The later in autumn you go the more restricted daylight will become.

Winter. Cheapest for renting camper vans (great deals!). Beautiful landscapes with snow. Northern Lights. However, daylight hours are very restricted (3 hours on 21st December). Some roads will close, attractions may not be possible to see. Very cold. 4 WD is highly recommended.

Spring. Cheap before the crowds set in. Beautiful flowers and colours. Snow is starting to melt. Longer daylight hours. However, roads still may be impassable. Snow will turn into rain

Language: Their main language spoken throughout Iceland is Icelandic, however English is widely spoken and in all tourist areas.
Capital: Reykjavik.
Power Adaptors: The plugs in Iceland are Type F (European). The standard voltage is 220-240 V. I recommend buying a universal adapter like this one.
Climate: Iceland is an all-year destination, depending on what your primary purpose of visiting is. It’s a sub-artic country, so temperatures even in summer rarely rise above 20c. Expect a whole lot of snow in winter too!
Visas: European countries do not need a visa to visit, however visitors from non-Schengen countries will need to apply for a visa before travelling to Iceland. Click here to see if you need a visa to visit.
Safety: Iceland is one of the safest destinations in the world, and personally one of the best places for solo female travellers! It also ranks number 1 on the global peace index 2019! Can’t fault that!
ATMS: Nearly everything in Iceland can be paid with credit card, even campgrounds! Which is great, as you don’t need to carry lots of cash around with you. Make sure to get a credit/debit card that doesn’t charge for overseas transactions. I suggest Starling Bank for UK citizens.
